Now that warmer weather is just around the corner we will all be spending more time in our yards. One item you might consider adding to your yard is a birdhouse or feeder. But of course, one that blends in with your modern decor.

Here are few sources for birdhouses and feeders that don’t compromise design for function

Modernica

We are obsessed with the stunning and sophisticated design of the Case Study Ceramics Bird Houses from Modernica. The lava glaze comes in four colors — it would be quite the design element to buy one of each and hang them in a grouping in your yard.

Loll Designs offers three different styles of birdhouses and in a selection of colors. The Rapson birdhouse is based on a sketch by midcentury architect Ralph Rapson and is meant to resemble the Hope Luthern Church designed and built by Rapson in 1971.

For a less abstract look, check out the offerings from VivaTerra for literally, a house for the birds. The midmod stone birdhouse and midmid birdhouse are great examples.

Speaking of sculptures, check out these glass and brass bird feeders designed by this family owned company. Several of their options also include a squirrel baffle to keep squirrels out of the feeder.

Once I started researching birdhouses I found that different types of birdhouses work best in different geographical areas and for the birds of that specific area.

This article from the National Wildlife Federation gives tips on how to select the right birdhouse for the birds in your area as does this article from NestWatch offered by Cornell University. The NestWatch site also has a tool they call Right Bird, Right House that allows you to filter by where you live to see what birdhouse would be the best for the birds in your area.
