Modernica - Classic Mid Century Planters

Modernica, founded in 1989 and based in Los Angeles, is a furniture company that specializes in reproducing classic mid century modern designs, particularly those by Charles and Ray Eames. Although they are not officially licensed by Eames Office, they can produce chairs and other Eames furniture because they acquired the original molds and machinery used to produce them.

Their line of Case Study Ceramics are hand-made ensuring that unlike mass produced planters, they will retain their unique characteristics.  We love their classic cylinder shaped planters but the hour glass planter would look very chic on a patio.

Hip Haven Planters come in multiple colors and give a mid century punch to any home.

Hip Haven Bullet Planters

Nothing screams mid century like a bullet planter! Our favorites are made by a company based in Austin, Texas called Hip Haven. Their planters come in tall, medium and short sizes and in a variety of mcm colors. You can group them together or space them out for a burst of color. The planters are best suited for covered outdoor areas. The company will even drill a drainage hole if needed but make sure to note that on your order form.

Blue Dot Pedestal Planters

Athough better known for their furniture, BluDot now offers these striking pedestal planters. The planters come in small, medium and large and are made from light weight powdered coated aluminum and feature a drain plug.

Most Modest Unusual Pleated Planter

The Michigan-based company, Most Modest, offers one of the most unusual planters we have seen with its Tess planter series. The planters feature pleated side panels and can stand alone or be nested together to divide a dining or cocktail area on your patio. The planters are shipped flat packed and are assembled without tools.

Customer Planters from Pots Planters & More

When we needed a planter with specific dimensions we reached out to Pots Planters & More to fabricate a custom aluminum planter for us. In addition to custom planters they also offer a selection of in stock planters in a variety of colors and sizes. Their customer service was extremely helpful and they even sent us no charge paint samples. When we chipped the paint on the planter they sent touch-up paint at no charge as well.

Planters from CB2, Crate & Barrel and West Elm

And of course, the big box companies such as CB2, Crate & Barrel and West Elm offer a wide variety of planters. They often have great sales but be aware that the frequent back ordered status of their products can result in many months of delay.

Lastly, for the mcm design purists the hunt for the perfect vintage Gainey planter would be the ultimate addition to any mcm patio.
